Has this ever happened to you?
« on: May 26, 2014, 11:04:13 PM »
Ok I will try to get this worded proper so I can get some advice.I bought Weaver scope bases for my Rem.700,They are stamped 35 and 36 Package said for Rem. model 700.When I put the scope on it it had a .030 gap between the scope and the scope ring at the front. Can anyone tell me what the heck could be wrong.

first thing that came to mind was you got a 30mm ring,   1" rings would be  25.4mm

too big of a difference for .030mm gap

perhaps you got the ring bound up or too long of a screw and bottomed out?  Is the ring tight to the base or is there a gap there too?

You most likely got the front and rear bases mixed up. On 700s there are two different height scope rings if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the reply,Yes one is taller than the other but the bolt pattern is diff. from front to back so you cant mix them up.

KFhunter before I went to check on your theory I thought to myself,If that was indeed the problem the gap would be the same front and rear,Its only a gap in the front.

I put a .030 shim under the front base and the scope goes on straight and tight. But I dont want to jimmy rig it together.

The only other thing I can think of is to check and make sure they are the correct bases. Maybe there is a difference between older and newer model 700s.

I just looked it up, there doesn't look like there is more than one design. maybe take to the shop where you got the bases and see what they have to say.

I just read a tutorial on todays standards and basically they have these issues now more than they used to,Best solution from them is to buy better bases and rings,If the problem is still there,Then it could be the tapped holes in said rifle are off enough to shift base lower than it is supposed to be and off to the side also causing you to run out of adjustment. If this is the case they say to send rifle back to manufacture and have them fix the issue. So all in all Quality has taken a back seat more and more these days. Thanks for all the help guys,They also said that they sell shims to fix the problem so I guess if I shim it up its not jimmy rigging.

I misunderstood, I thought you meant the rings were too big for the scope.

OK so I decided to start from scratch,I went down tonight and bought new base set and new ring set.mounted the bases no problems.Mounted new ring lowers,No problems so far.Lapped in rings(didn't take much at all).Mounted the scope, torqued everything down.put bore site on,Sighted it in with bore sight.Everything went together great no issues,Something was wrong between the weaver bases and the rings.I will check it out tomarrow and let you all know how it goes.
